I think Glass Castle was a well written and captivateing book. Jeanette Walls weaves a tale the likes of which many didn't even know existed in the U.S. She keeps you interested in the ongoing struggle the she and her siblings have just to find a meal. A drunk father that constantly loses jobs, and a mother who hates working when she actually does have a job, keeps the children in a close knit bond, relying on each other to get through their father's drunkin rages. Though I'm normally not inclined to books such as hers, I feel that it was a good read and deserves a good score. ****

I think the book was good at the beging but it is streched out to far. They do the same thing over and over again. It's getting boring. The whole book is about rex walls maked bad decicions gets drunk and they move around the country twice in every chapter.

I think the book is fascinating. It's really interesting on how the Walls family live their lives and what they do to survive. You never know what is going to happen to the family because every chapter something happens that changes the life of the family. The family will have money in one chapter and in the next Rex or Rosemary may do something and they will be picking out of trash cans for food again. The Walls family seems so unbelieveble to be real which is what makes it so fascinating.

I think the book was really interesting in the begining because it was unpredictable and its a memoir (knowing that this really happened) and it was just not like anything I had read before. However, I think now it is starting to get less interesting. I think its starting to drag out the ending and its just getting so predictable. They are always moving and Rex is always drunk. But maybe Jeannette does this purposefully to symbolize how she felt about her life back then; like its just getting old living like this with no certainty or stablity. Overall I think its a good book but its getting a little predictable.

I agree with you Bryan. The book was great in the beginning but now it's not as great. I think one reason is that in the beginning, Jeanette was fascinated by evrything which always made the story interesting. Now that Jeanette is older has a better understanding of everything she sees her life in a more dull perspective. Life's not as great as she used to think it was which is easily shown in what she chooses to talk about.

I really liked this book. Like most people said its getting boring and predictable. The same things keep happening to the Walls family. Other than that, its a good book. Its well written and it really makes you open your eyes as to how some people lived their lives in the Untied States. I'm not a big reader, but this book has something to it that keeps me interested.

Glass Castle is an interesting book and will most definitely change my way of thinking in the future. To know that everything they went through, or something similar to it, actually happened really makes me think if they are the only family out there that is in that situation. A lot of people seem to think that the book is getting too predictable and it probably is but you have to remember that it is a true story and you can only bend the truth so much to make it more interesting. I'd try thinking what I would do if I were in her situation and compare our outcomes. That is one why to empathize with Jeannette's predicament, which isn't an easy situation to be in.

I agree with you Virgil, although the book is getting rather predictable, it's much more believable. The struggles Jeanette has to go through are tough.I would much rather this book be based on true events than twisting the truth to make it more interesting.I was disappointed when i found out this was the exact circumstance with a book i really enjoyed, a million little pieces.James Fray faked most of his events in order to make them more interesting, which, in my opinion, makes it less appealing.

I agree with you po-po. I love reading memiors because all of it is actually true. To find out that something is not can be very disappointing. It makes you wonder what is true and what isn't.

I think that The Glass Castle was a very good book. It was interesting to be because it told of a livestyle that is completely different than mine. It is hard for me to imagine living a life like that. I admired Jeanette very much at how she was able to rise above the circumstances she was born into, and become a successful person. It is inspiring to me, because it tells me that if someone whos life was that bad can turn her life around, I can too.

I agree withFlambeau. At first i did'nt care for Glass Castle, and i hated Rex and Rosemarys parenting skills. At times I definently wanted to throw the book. When Jeannette was describing the houses she mad me feel like i was actually there. I really got into the book and i could not put the book down.
I disagree with Josh, i did'nt feel like the book was dragging on and on. But, it depends on what you like to read. Me, personally i like books that are based on true stories.

I have a question. Do any of you think Jeannette would have been successful if she was born the time Maureen was?

I think that glass castle was a good book. It held my attention long enough for me to read the hole book. I liked the end of the book because it was ended with the boundary between turbulent and order. It helps the readers come back to the way the Walls lived. “between turbulent and order”. The Walls lived there lives right on the edge. If anything was there to push them just a little they would of fallen and in the end they did. There family split up in the end. Although they still stayed in touch they still fell in the end. But the harsh reality is we’re all destined for the grave.

I want to try and answer silverblacknights question. I dont think she would have been a sucessful because if she was born then she would have never experienced the same thing she did when she was born at the time she was for example she would of never been burned by the fire, which brought her to the hospital that which made their family move to a different place which then means from there they are already moving in a different direction and so mabey life turned out totaly different which means i think she would of never became the same sucess because she would of never experienced the same thing that she would have when she was born at the time she was supposed to because she would have never had to go through the same things she did like being thrown out the car and the thought she had about wondering if her dad was going to leave her behind she would have had a totaly different perspective of life. So i think she might not have become as great as a person as she is now.
